The 2020 Holst Christmas Book List

Reading. It’s good for the soul, it’s good for the body. It helps us to rest, reflect and reset. Books are a regular theme of Holst team meetings, where we share our latest great reads and encourage others to try something different. From Charlie Macksey’s beautiful drawings of an unlikely group of friends to Roz Savage’s awe-inspiring story of life-changing adventure to the concept of fairer and kinder leadership from David Bodanis, Team Holst has a book recommendation for you.

“What do you want to be when you grow up?” asked the mole. “Kind,” said the boy. This book explores an unlikely friendship and the poignant lessons they learn together. Each character is a different part of the same person. The book is about having courage in difficult times, about love and friendship and how these help build resilience.
Lu Smith, Training Co-ordinator
McRaney is making a point: Every ‘rational’ decision you make in your life is based on an underlying bias. This book shows how your psychological beliefs affect you every day, even though you don’t consciously realise it.
Jo Emmerson, Managing Director
I can’t understate just how life-changing this book was for me. 2018 was a challenging year. I struggled to understand why I made a few poor decisions that I instantly regretted. I was left asking why did I do that? on more than one occasion. Prof Steve gave me the answers that I needed to more forward with greater self-awareness and emotional regulation. Of course I’m not perfect, and still make questionable choices, but at least now stand a chance of catching my chimp before it really runs riot with me!
Catherine Hordern, Marketing Co-ordinator
A sales book with a difference: the authors believe success comes from understanding what the customer needs rather than what the salesperson wants to sell. This is quite a shift from traditional sales models and reinforces the point that successful salespeople create value. I believe that emotional intelligence and resilience are a key driver to this success.
Iain Chalmers, Director
Stories of endurance and adventure have always gripped me but Roz’s journey was different. She is an ordinary person who was trapped in a lifestyle she didn’t want, having to pretend that she was something she wasn’t. While we might not want to give up everything to row the world, face 20ft waves and face death by dehydration, we can use her story to inspire us to take the plunge and do the things that make us truly fulfilled.
Vanessa Lovegrove, Senior Consultant
Hands up, I’ve only just started this, but it’s a terrific collection of stories about highly successful people who didn’t tread on the values and feelings of those around them. It’s a timely reminder that nice guys don’t finish last – many of them in fact go on to create incredible achievements, from Danny Boyle at the 2012 London Olympics Opening Ceremony, to the gruff but kind depressive who led the team that built the Empire State Building in just over a year. After a tough year, this is a great book to inspire us all to be kinder, better people.
Grant Taylor, Senior Consultant
