How to teach “creativity tools” to anyone

creativity and, indeed, thinking is that it can be taught; anyone can learn how to be creative or think smarter. It is no different to playing golf or tennis, you can learn how to do it. Admittedly some will be better at it than others. Poor education or a lack of it is not a barrier to being able to create ideas. In 1999 Holst produced a 6-hour training course based on thinking and creativity using the Six Thinking Hats® and Lateral Thinking tools called “Thinking Smarter Not Harder”. This course was specifically designed for the 18-24 year olds who were unemployed. It was not unusual for the delegates, on any one course, to include graduates straight from university and those who could not read or write. They were all able to learn the skills of thinking and creativity. The course was so successful that it is now being used in other areas for many disadvantaged people. It was, and still is the only course within the UK employment programme where literally anyone can attend; all other courses demand a certain degree of literacy, numeracy or IT.
