de Bono thinking – Beyond the analysis/judgement model
In some ways we have done extremely well with a very limited sort of thinking. We have done very well in science and technology but have hardly made any progress in human affairs.
If we look at the rough stages of evolution of human kind we might find an organism moving from the water to the land. Then the organism climbed into trees. Then the creature came down from the trees and eventually walked on two legs. Then there was the use of tools. Then there was language and the ability to direct attention and to communicate. Then came “recognising”. This means the ability to recognise standard situations. Once such situations were recognised we would then know how to deal with them and also what might happen (prognosis). Virtually one hundred per cent of education is concerned with learning about standard situations – and how to deal with them. Almost ninety per cent of our thinking thereafter is also concerned with recognising. The next stage in human evolution is that we are going to start to “think”. I suspect there will be huge changes in our thinking behaviour in the next millennium. It always amazes me that we have been so complacent about our thinking software for so very long.
