Over the years Dr Edward de Bono has shared great insights through his messages. This series of blogs revisits some of those highlights.
…to design the way forward…
At the Renaissance when Greek thinking came into Europe through the Arabs in Spain, schools, universities and ‘thinking’ in general were in the hands of Church people. They did not need perceptual thinking. They did not need creative or design thinking. They did not even need constructive thinking. What they did need was truth, logic and argument to prove heretics wrong. So critical thinking became the core thinking. Invention and design had to be carried out by individuals and the process has been very slow. To this day education systems still believe that critical thinking is enough. Critical thinking is essential just as the rear left wheel of a car is essential – but it is not enough. Progress needs the ability to design the way forward. The prevention of errors is not enough. The brakes of a car are only sufficient if the car is rolling down hill.Edward de Bono, 10th August 2007
