Over the years Dr Edward de Bono has shared great insights through his messages. This series of blogs revisits some of those highlights.
The lack of a specific word for ‘idea creativity’ has very serious consequences. The inability to distinguish idea creativity from artistic creativity means that educators encourage the development of music, dancing, painting etc. in the belief that they are developing idea creativity. At the same time there is a tendency to ignore formal methods and tools of creativity (such as lateral thinking) on the grounds that it might not produce a Beethoven. The word ‘creativity’ is very inadequate. Bringing something into being is ‘creative’. So making a mess is creative. The elements of ‘change’, ‘new’, and ‘value’ are all mixed into ‘creativity’. In some areas value can be tested. In the world of art the test is purely subjective. Painters who were laughed at originally eventually sold for millions of dollars.Edward de Bono, 13th January 2007
