Classic de Bono: ..doing..
Over the years Dr Edward de Bono has shared great insights through his messages. This series of blogs revisits some of those highlights.
..doing..
I may well have covered this subject before and this may well be a repetition. That will happen from time to time. The famous French philosopher, Rene Descartes said: “I think therefore I am”. While it is possible to understand the context in which this was said (the sum of my thinking defines my existence) the saying reinforces the notion that sitting and thinking is enough. Our traditions of thinking seem to be involved in analysing, understanding, knowing and arguing about ‘the truth’. The very important ‘design’ aspect of thinking is almost totally neglected. I have a major book coming out on this very subject early in 2003. My response to Descartes is: “Ago ergo erigo”. In addition to sounding nice this emphasises the importance of ‘doing’. The meaning is: “I do therefore I build (contribute)”. It would be useful if universities and other intellectual establishments paid more attention to this aspect of thinking.Edward de Bono, 29th December 2002
