Classic de Bono: … Doctor of Design
Over the years Dr Edward de Bono has shared great insights through his messages. This series of blogs revisits some of those highlights.
Doctor of Design
By the time you read this message I shall have been awarded an honorary degree by the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. The degree is that of Doctor of Design. The designation is not mine but is well chosen. As readers of this message will be well aware, I have often claimed that thinking based on analysis and the recognition of standard situations is not enough – no matter how excellent. We need to be able to design ways forward. The same applies to problem solving and conflict resolution. Interestingly, architects know this full well. An architect cannot usually remove the ’cause of a problem’ (restricted site, poor budget, planning regulations etc.), but has to design a way forward. Many years ago I suggested that the UN should set up just such a design department.Edward de Bono nmt
