Business Writing: Getting Started

Writing Skills from Writing Dynamics from Holst

The hardest part of written communications is usually the very first sentence. How often do you tidy your desk, make another cup of coffee or even pay a bill before you can face sitting down to record those first few words?

The key to getting started is to take the plunge and dive in.
  • Begin anywhere, not necessarily at the beginning.
If you have a central message, start there. You’ll find that you can work backwards and forwards when those first crucial words take shape on the screen.
  • Write rough.
At this stage, you don’t need full sentences. You need the creativity to flow unhindered by correct structure. If the right word doesn’t come to mind at the time, leave yourself a clue and come back to it when you edit.
  • Keep going.
Even if what you see looks like garbage, it could lead to something fabulous further down the line (Green Hat Thinking!). Push on through and the communication gems will shine. If stray ideas come to mind, jot them down on a pad. They might be useful later but right now they are a distraction from your focus.
  • Don’t edit.
Editing is essential, just not yet. Editing engages a different part of your brain and slows down your creativity. You need to create a draft which contains all you need to say. The detail can come later. Top tip – turn off your spell and grammar check to avoid the temptation to edit. Award-winning writers write clearly, concisely, persuasively and fast! Learn how you can do the same with our terrific 2-day workshop, Writing Dynamics ™. Writing Dynamics ™ will give you a writing system allowing you to get the best out of your business writing.
